'Kovalainen should have been there to stop it.' He's not a supporting driver, and I think he proved that today with his win. I couldn't be happier for him. |
OK, this isn't perfect because the Live Timing archive only shows the positions at the end of each lap, but here's something for your dad...
If we look at those drivers that started on the dirty side of the grid and their positions at the end of lap 1:
Heikki dropped from 2nd to 3rd
Kubica dropped from 4th to 5th
Kimi dropped from 6th to 7th
Mark started 8th and was the first even-grid-position driver that hadn't dropped a position according to the LT, but if I recall correctly he was actually running in 9th for part of the first lap so must have made a position up again on that lap.
In other words, the dirty side of the grid IS as bad as all the commentators and drivers make out, so there wasn't a great deal that Heikki could have done to keep Flip behind him. Once he was past Heikki, it was down to Lewis to keep Flip behind, and quite simply Flip pulled off a great move and there wasn't a lot Lewis could do other than resist as hard as he did then realise that if he resisted any harder that they would both have gone off! _________________ Mark, Lewis, Heikki --> My ideal podium for the 2007 season.
Well you've all done it at least once boys, now how about being up there all together sometime next season?! |

He just doesn't like Heikki. Because I do. He's like that.
I think it was Damon Hill, doing commentary for ITV (it might have been someone else on the ITV team but it was on ITV) who said the difference between the dirty and clean side of the grid was a lot greater in Hungary than any other track. There was nothing Heikki could do, my dad just likes to tell me that he's a bad driver. 'He just can't put it together on race day.' The only driver he likes that I also like is Lewis. And he's also a big fan of comparing Heikki to Lewis. It annoys me but I get on with it. Heikki winning yesterday was just what I needed to prove to my dad that he is in fact a good driver.
And he also went one better than Raikkonen and Hakkinen if my information is correct, because he won a race in his first season for McLaren, which neither of them did _________________ Mini: 'How dare you go out when Monaco is on?!'

Thanks, Vampire, for your post, it really proved the point exactly how it should be done- with simple facts.

Damon should know!! When he qualified that Arrows on P3 in 1997, he was P2 into the 1st corner (and thenm promptly moved into P1 but that's another story). I, for one, KNEW that Heikki will lose his position. In Hungary it's better to be P3 than P2, as history shows again and again. Nothing Heikki could do, but it all turned out for the best, really |

Hei Hei
I've been on holiday, so I haven't been able to use Internet these days.
I always say that life is always fair... sooner or later. Sometimes it's unfair, but not always.
In this case, the 1st victory for Heikki Kovalainen in F1 was something really (Add the adjective you want). Firstly, for him, of course. I'm sure it has been worth living some bad moments to reach it. Sometimes you spend your time in something, and then you got nothing. Just a step more to continue growing as a driver. I guess this one is a bit bigger than the previous ones.
We can't deny that this victory was a bit unexpected, because it came from a special situation, but I can't forget races like Spain 2001 or Europe 2005. In those races, a McLaren was leading, and when the competiton was about to reach the end... tough luck for Häkkinen and Räikkönen (Both of them were Finnish... curious) and victory for M.Schumacher and F.Alonso, respectively. In this case, it was the other way arround. And I can't forget some races this season in which Heikki deserved more than the things he achieved. So it seems life is actually fair.
Congratulations. And thank you for those happy moments we lived on Sunday. We like Formula 1 and we like seeing our teams or our drivers winning. That also makes us smile. (At least in my case!) |

true. also, keeping your car on the track and having a car that can run the whole race is just as much a part of f1 as driving really well.
i guess lots of people feel the need to criticize since they feel a bit hard-done-by on massa's account and also theres alot of people out there who would rather not see a mclaren on the podium just because lewis hamilton is in the team. _________________
