Hocki Hocki tututututu! Part 2
Saturday morning we arrived at the track quite early, hoping not all the drivers would have arrived. The first one we ran into was Oliver Jarvis, and we asked him how the cake tasted. He laughed, said he had taken a small bite, but wasn’t allowed to eat it until Sunday afternoon as apparantly he was overweight. Dunno where that came from as he doesn’t look overweight at all! He’s quite skinny, but perhaps he’s got big bones *giggles*
Next one to be spotted was Winki Winkelhock. “Have you got time for a cake now? I doubt you’ve had too much chocolate already.” But now he blamed breakfast, so we said we’d bug him after quali, which was fine. (Only we didn’t in the end, because of other stuff...)
We waited in the paddock and saw Mathias trying to run away from the fans, in which he half succeeded. Gary tried to do the same, by claiming he had to have breakfast, but gave up after a while when there was a mass of fans stopping him. Paul tried to be Paul, but did pose for a photo with Debbie though. Alex Premat looked a bit distracted, but still, he posed as well.
When we thought everyone had pretty much arrived, we headed to Audi and ran into Henk and Paul. We decided to wait for Chris, but he wasn’t anywhere to be seen. Katherine Legge came out, but I almost missed her. Almost. F3 quali was done and Henkie Waldschmidt came walking back. His body language showed total disappointment. Poor guy. Then Chris came out in his typical way of trying to avoid the fans, that weren’t there anyway, because they were all at Merc for a certain Ralf Schumacher. Finally Chris came outside and greeted us with a ‘Goodmorning!’ Turned out he had been here since 8AM. He said the car was pretty hard to drive, but despite that he did pretty good yesterday! Chris of course would like to have a cake, but was somewhat suspicious that perhaps we’ve done stuff in it, so he’d offer it to his mechanic first. When we told him Tomczyk and Jarvis already had one he was somewhat convinced and took a small bite. He drove quali later on, so he was fine.
We went to the Merc grandstand to watch the final practice and I was hoping for some flames from the guys, but they weren’t as useful as last year... Hardly any flames to be seen and no flames to be captured on camera.
The first F3 race started and Nico Hulkenberg was having a comfortable lead over Mika Mäki. Renger van der Zande did pretty good as well, after having a pretty poor qualifying. But then we had a horror moment when Jon Lancaster drove at the back of another card and launched himself into the air. He flew over, landed up side down and shove off track, turning over again when he hit the gravel. I of course did not take a photo of it. I had just zoomed my camera in at the maximum to try and get some overtaking manouvres when it happend...so that was a big disappointment. Fortunately the guy turned out to be pretty much okay, but I don’t know if he can start tomorrow. At the restart, Hulk had to park his car and Renger was one of the quickest on track. He finished 8th, starting from pole tomorrow. We waved madly with the Dutch flags and got a wave from him. We walked back to the paddock to congratulate Renger with the result and offered him another birthday cake, which he gladly accepted! Also, he asked if we were the mad idiots on the grandstand. Euh...yup! Pretty cool he spotted us! The German guy who was sitting behind us started to moan, but shut up you old miserable git, we stood there for like 30 seconds! When Renger had passed us, we dropped the flags! Moaning cow!
The pitlane was open for the pitwalk and we quickly went inside. Of course the whole pitlane was full with people, so we just took a photo of Mathias’ and Susie’s car and then the pitlane closed already, so we walked to the exit where Henkie Waldschmidt’s car was still parked. He drove into someone at the start and his front suspension broke. Took some photos of that and then left the pitlane. We went to check out the Porsche paddock and the F3 paddock. Spotted the cups at team Mucke and took F3 race winner Mika Mäki in the sandwich for a photo.
Went back to the grandstand to watch DTM quali and after the quali, which was succesfull and not so successfull. Timo did awesome, he’s on pole *YAY*, Mathias didn’t do too awesome, and has to start from P18. Good news, it can only get better tomorrow!!
After quali we headed to the Porsche paddock as the guys were driving their cars over to the pitlane as they had their qualifying ahead of them. Patrick Huisman showed up and Wendy reached out to his car, with a cake in his hand. He laughed and waved, muwhaha.
We then sat down at the Mercedes VIP lounge as the Mercedes press conference was about to start. We only had to wait for 2.5 hours...*sigh*
The Porsches were done with quali and we spotted Patrick Huisman, so I shouted: “PATRICK!!!! You’d like another cake now?” but he refused, possibly because he had a team meeting.
Only two more hours to wait...
My bum was starting to hurt because I sat down on the ground for aaaages...
But finally, finally Florian König showed up and the press co was about to start, with a special guest: MIKA! That was an ace surprise!!
When he came over to our way, we said Debbie was new at DTM and she was sooo pleased to meet Mika. He was so kind to us. Chatted, joked. Really cool. Typically Mika.
After Mika, Mathias showed up and of course we screamed our lungs out. Mathias wasn’t too pleased though, which is logical, because quali didn’t go that well unfortunately.
Susie was next and she and Mika kissed! Big time busted! Muwhaha, hihi...okay...pathetic (That’s us!!). Maro Engel was next and while he was giving autographs, he practically gave the whole paddock one. Hihi, trying to gain fans! Kidding! We are lost already... :S
Gary Paffett was asked whether he spoke German already. Noooo, of course not. Gary can only race, Gary cannot learn, I reckon. Susie however, was kind enough to mention he already knew one word in German; Apfelschorle (aka Apfelsaftschorle), followed by laughter from the crowd.
Maro Engel in the meantime had come over to our side and Nobbie Haug was interviewed. When the fans could ask Nobbie questions, me and Wendy shouted “Wo ist Alex?!” But noooo, no answer on that question. Maro however had to laugh, and said it was probably hard to get Alex back in DTM. *sigh* we know that :’( Uncool! Stupid Nobbie...Stupid Merc...
Baco Bernd was proving once again he’s got a sense of humour. Ralf was next and the madhouse broke loose. *sigh* pushing people and all that. I did manage to get the three photos I had brought with me signed by him though! That was cool. But then again, they were cool photos
Jamie was next and proudly announced he knew one German word: Guten Tag. When he walked down to sign, me and Wendy shouted: Is it a bird? Is it a plane? Noooo, it’s Jamie Green! He of course had to laugh and came our way a little later. We told him his banner had turned pink, because of yesterday’s rain and he didn’t really know what to think of that, but of course we’ll get him a new one for Zandvoort. No pink banner anymore! Jamie deserves a proper banner!
Last was Bruno as he qualified best. When he came down to sign we asked Jamie if it was possible to have a sandwich photo with Bruno, because that was Debbie’s mission. He then shouted: “BRUNO! Photo!” Bruno at first said he’d show up later, but Jamie insisted he had to hurry up, so Bruno hopped over. It was not that easy, but Wendy managed to take a photo of Debbies sandwich and miss Debbie was a very happy bunny!
Oh and the weather was really friendly today! I even got a sunburn!
Sunday was again quite an early day. Eventhough the DTM warm up starts at 1 now, we figured quite a few people would be heading to the track early. And indeed they did. We were put on a parking lot in Stuttgart so to speak! They even ran shuttle buses to the track, but since two buses had just left, one other was approaching and the mass amount of people waiting (They could easily fill 3 buses!) we’d opted for a walk. It was about half an hour and the weather was okay. The officials had hung signs to the track, so we didn’t get lost this time!
Arriving at the track, the Porsches were just about to start and we watched those for a short moment before we headed on to the DTM paddock. Maro Engel had just arrived and we spotted Renger as well. Wished him luck for the second race, which he started from pole and when Maro came closer, Debbie was about to ask him for an autograph, when suddenly he ran away. We were like; WTF?!?! But he ran over to Renger to wish him luck as well, I reckon...Then he came our way again and Debbie got her autograph and me and Wendy got a sandwich! Oh, and he asked if we were still looking for Alex *snort*
Not all drivers had arrived, as the mass of people waiting at the driver’s parking place was huge! Bernd Schneider arrived, with his son and he first had to sign for hundreds of people before he could try and make his way to the paddock. Bruno, Susie and Gary arrived as well. Gary in a fancy (possibly rented) Mercedes A-class btw *giggles*
We then headed to the Mercedes grandstand as we still had to hang our banners and watched the F3 race. Fortunately not a horror crash like yesterday, but still quite an entertaining race, which was won by Renger! Well, after a massive lack of sleep, a sunburn and a victory from Renger, we were just getting more and more annoying and our first mission was: RENGER!
We headed to the paddock and practically ran into him. Congratulated him, but he had to go to the press co so we’d said we’d be coming over somewhat later.
Then headed to the DTM paddock to do some more stalking and my Maro radar was working perfectly. I spotted him and me and Wendy rushed towards him, shouting that Renger had won and if he had seen it. Of course he had (stupid question) and he asked if we could pass on our congratulations if we’d see Renger and he said he’d text him later (I wonder if Maro was getting annoyed by us already... :S).
Also, I spotted a dude wearing the weirdest outfit ever and I turned to Wendy saying: "Look at the outfit from that dude. He looks like a weirdo!"
With all due respect, but how was I supposed to know he was the king of some African country?!
At one of the Porsche teams there was a cup standing on the car and I took a photo of that. An annoying bloke was standing next to it, so I cut him off the photo, never realizing it was the driver of the car *sigh* I can’t know everything...can I?
We then headed to the F3 paddock and took some photos at the Prema box. Charlie Kimball’s car was standing in the middle, heavily damaged due to the start crash when some other guy and Henkie Waldschmidt drove into the back of his car.
We had our photo taken with a champagne smelling Renger and then hopped off to Nico Hülkenberg who was talking to some people.
A kiddo asked him for an autograph and he was like: "Have you got a marker with you?" The poor kiddo didn’t, but fortunately for him, there were 3 obsessed chicks waiting for Hülk, who all happend to have a marker with them, so that problem was solved quite easily. Next problem though; where to sign? The kiddo wanted his autograph on his arm and Hülk was like: "Really? Are you sure?" Followed by a heavily nodding kid. I bet he’s not gonna have a shower for a while
We asked Hülk for another sandwich photo and he was like: "Again?!" Yes mister, I wasn’t there earlier! So I still needed a photo :p
We headed back to the Porsche paddock to look for Patrick Huisman and were talking a bit about him and Mike Verschuur (Where did he finish anyways?!) and well, stupid girly talk really, when all of a sudden I noticed a bloke, walking on our left with a huuuuuuuuuuge grin on his face...Ehm...euh...could that be? Would that be? Smoothly changed the subject, in case he was. I don’t have a clue what Mike looks like, but I bet it was him. Later on we met Henk and Paul again and asked what Mike looked like. Turned out it was him...hmmz...not the cleverest move we had made there *sigh* Ah well, at least now I know for sure what he looks like!
We headed back to the Mercedes grandstand and saw Mika was giving an interview on stage. By the time we got there he was done and drove back to the paddock on his scooter.
The good thing about the Mercedes grandstand is the fact that they always have an interview in front of it, this time with Mika, Nobbie, Niki Lauda and Mr Hamilton. Lewis wasn’t there, but he’s most likely to attend a DTM race this year as him and his dad are massive DTM fans.
Oh, hihi, and on the screen we saw drivers hopping to the toilet. Ralf was done, Stinki Winki was next and Mathias had to wait for his turn *giggle* So they are human after all!
During the drivers parade we noticed a couple of guys were missing; Mathias Lauda (we figured Winki had locked him up in the toilet ), Bruno Spengler and Mike Rockenfeller weren’t there. Miss Legge was waving American Style and Ralf (who absolutely adores his fans...) couldn’t really be arsed to...We were shouting when Jamie was interviewed and he must have spotted us as we were the only for standing at that time :S
Oh, and judging the photos some of the drivers and the guys that were interviewed before the driver’s parade noticed our banners *YAY*. On one photo Niki Lauda looks like; wtf?! Has my son got a banner made for him?!
The DTM race was pretty boring. Not that much action. Just some overtaking attempts in front of us, of which some succeeded. The only one who didn’t manage to finish was Chris Albers, because Ralf had collided with him in the Spitzkehre and Chris had to give up. I was well pleased Timo was second (so he did continue where he had left off!), a little less pleased with the results of Jamie, Mathias and Maro, but the season has just started, a lot can still happen! And I’d rather seen Martin Tomczyk overtaking Bruno Spengler. He tried everything he could, but didn’t succeed. Pity.
By that time, dark clouds had reached the track, but the rain came a bit too late. And it was just a small shower anyways, because the sun was back really quick. I finally spotted Sabrina (I was beginning to think she wasn’t there this weekend) and had a brief chat with her. Then headed to the media center to congratulate Timo, but the guys took a short route towards the Audi VIP lounge. Bugger!
Sat down at Mercedes and just watched people. Maro was going to the pits with a garbage bag, filled with whatever. See, now there’s a driver who’s helpful to the team!
My Mathias radar wasn’t working that well though as I did say: Ey, who’s standing over there? When a mass of people rushed over to one of the trucks. Wendy, who’s Mathias radar was working a little better and me rushed over and took some pics.
Tom Kristensen came back, with a beer in his hand and signed for a few people, then said he had to go back to Audi.
My Timo radar though, was working perfectly and I spotted Timo from miles away. Jumped up, congratulated him with P2 and had my photo taken with him. Mattias Ekström walked past us a short while after.
When we were about to leave, we spotted Mathias and waited for a bit. When he came over we had a short chat (he was about to leave as well) and then took the long walk back to the parking lot. Had dinner at the McDonalds and then drove back home.
We must have set a new record! Seriously! We were fast!! And...even better news; WE HIT THE 200 KM/H!!!! Downhill that is, but we did it! I wanted to take a photo of it for proof, but by that time we had to slow down because of traffic. Oh, and no guys with laser guns this time, well at least, not that we’ve seen
MIKA!
Mathias on track. Took this pic with my mate's camera, which is ab fab! But she didn't want to swap cameras, so now I am stuck with my crappy one again
Renger after his first victory of the season! I'm a tad pissed I didn't get the whole car on camera though. And yes, I've asked him on Hyves whether he spotted us, because it does look like he's looking our direction1
Renger in the sandwich!
Start of the DTM race
As said, my other pics can be seen at
