Kovalainen crashes heavily in Bahrain
Renault's Heikki Kovalainen escaped injury after a massive crash during the first day of this week's testing at the Sakhir circuit.
The Finn, back in action in Bahrain after two days of rest following last week's test, lost control of his car at turn seven, going off the track at high speed and smashing against the barriers.
The car's right side was completely destroyed, but Kovalainen was able to climb out of the car on his own.
It is believed the Renault driver lost control of his car after being caught out by the strong wind.
The team said Kovalainen, who has replaced Spain's double world champion Fernando Alonso in the Renault line-up alongside Italian Giancarlo Fisichella, would not be testing again on Tuesday.
I'm really happy he is OK!!! _________________ If you think racing is safe, than you're not going fast enough... |

RF1 PP that writes the Renault F1 Blog has confirmed that Heikki is okay as well....But Heikki won't be testing again today as the team fix the car, and the data is analysed from the impact. |

Here's some Only registered users can see links on this forum! Register or Login on forum! | from Turun Sanomat. I have translated it freely
Heikki Kovalainen, who has over 40 000 km testing experience with F1 cars, was caught up in the biggest accident of his career, when the second tests of Bahrain began on Tuesday.
"That was big slip-up. That was dangerous, but I only got a little headache. Too bad the car was totally wrecked and testing was delayed."
"That was my biggest accident ever. I haven't really gone off the track so hard before."
Kovalainen had begun Renault's final test programme in a promising way.
"The car felt good. I did my best time with old tyres, Giancarlo got to use new tyres. All the time I felt that now this car could really go fast."
The accident happened in the morning in turn seven when Kovalainen had managed to do just 19 laps.
"Speed is 245 km/h going into that turn. I was a little bit sloppy. I went slightly wide and I thought I can get it back with full throttle, but I lost it. The bottom of the car hit the kerb and that was it."
"There's no tyre barrier there. I hit the steel barrier so that the end of it twisted 30 degrees backwards and that softened the impact a bit. My head was dizzy for a moment, but I was OK. I didn't even have to take aspirin."
Kovalainen's helmet proved its safety.
"My helmet took some damage, so I can't use that one anymore. Neck support device took a lot of pressure. From the pictures you can see that my head swing to the side quite wildly, but still it felt like nothing."
Kovalainen analyzes everything with great detail.
"When you make a mistake, you must be more careful next time. But this won't leave anything into my subconscious. Now I just have to back to testing as soon as possible, but I think we can't do that before Wednesday afternoon."
"Renault must fly new parts from the factory during the night. That way we should get the car ready after the lunch."
------------------
Indeed Heikki's car was fixed today and fortunately there's still one full day left in Bahrain. |
