Surprise pole for Filippi in Bahrain

By Andrew van de Burgt Friday, April 13th 2007, 13:51 GMT

Super Nova's Luca Filippi beat the more fancied GP2 runners to claim pole position for the season opener in Bahrain.

The Italian timed his new tyre run in the middle of the 30-minute session to perfection to score his first pole in the series.

A superb late effort from series veteran Xandi Negrao took the Brazilian on to the front row for the first time in his GP2 career.

"It was a good lap, and after that we just waited to see if anyone could beat it," said Filippi.

"We made a change to the car after that, which was not so good, so I think we can have an even better car for the race."

Negrao's late lap knocked iSport's Andreas Zuber, who had been on pole prior to Filippi's run, back to third. Lucas di Grassi was fourth for reigning champs ART.

Bruno Senna did an excellent job to claim fifth for Arden. He will line up alongside another impressive rookie, Trident's Kohei Hirate.

Preseason favourite Timo Glock was a disappointing seventh, just ahead of series returnee Borja Garcia for Durango.

Mike Conway was 10th for Super Nova, ahead of Antonio Pizzonia - 12th after two off-track moments; and Giorgio Pantano in 13th.

Michael Ammermuller will start tomorrow's race from 15th in the second ART car.

Guys, why the dead silence? Wink was I the only one who dutifully watched both races? Wink
Congrats to the first time winners Luca Filippi and Nicolas Lappierre! Although Lappierre won so many races in A1 it is difficult to imagine this was his first win in GP2!! Great racing as always from the GP2 guys Smile Now an important decision needs to be taken - who do I support this year? Rolling Eyes Got to be Timo Glock Wink

It's a shame had to miss some of the racing as had to switch all the time between GP2 and A1 Confused

Bruno Senna & Mike Conway for me!

I know, it's all too easy to support someone with a name like Senna, but I think he could be the real deal - he's progressing through the series fast and the name probably helps, but he showed he's getting there on his own merit too.

And Mike Conway - a name from British F3, that showed he can race after coming from almost last on the grid to finish 5th! Yay!

Well, I saw all the races now and I really have to admit I don't have 1 favourite :$ I like Senna, Petrov and Conway but I don't think there is a Hamilton in the series this year

When our presenters were commentating GP2 in Barcelona, they said that Petrov should be starting from pole every single race, because he is fast, but not spectacularly fast, and he has great defence technique,so the battles in a queue behind him are making great racing!!! Laughing Laughing
