Cristiano da Matta is in a critical condition after brain surgery in hospital in Wisconsin after an accident in testing at the Road America circuit at Elkhart Lake. The Brazilian suffered head injuries when he hit a deer that had got onto the race track from the woods beside the track. The accident happened between turns five and six and eyewitness reports suggest that the Champ Car hit the animal with its right front wheel. The carcass of the deer then hit the driver and the car went off into the tyre barriers at Turn 6. Rescue crews were on the scene immediately and Da Matta was extracted from the car and flown by helicopter to the Theda Clark Memorial Hospital in nearby Neenah where he underwent emergency surgery.
It remains to be seen if there is any permanent damage.

Does anybody know where I can found the video of the accident, because i didn't see.
Here in Spain didn't speak so much of the accident, and the images only appear thursday the day of the accident and i couldn't see them.
Thanks! _________________ Heikki you are our God!! Next World Champion! |

I hate the sound of that... |

Da Matta out of coma
Former Toyota F1 driver Cristiano da Matta has come out of a coma and can now walk and talk, Champ Car Medical Director Dr. Chris Pinderski has said.
The 32-year-old was involved in a freak accident at a Champ Car test on August 3 when his RuSPORT car struck a deer at Road America in Elkhart Lake. The Brazilian suffered serious head injuries and has been recovering ever since at Theda Clark Medical Center in Neenah, Wisconsin.
However after almost a month in intensive car, Pinderski reported on Wednesday that da Matta is making "excellent progress".
"Although he is still somewhat confused," Pinderski explained, "he is now conversational in both English and Portuguese."
"Additionally, he has started to walk on his own for short periods of time with minimal assistance."
Pinderski revealed also that da Matta should be ready to start rehabilitation next week.

Wow, I'm new to this forum and this is the first time I get to know about that accident... Sounded like he was not far from having a fatal crash...
I'm glad he's better now...
I really like the Toyotas from the begining on, and so Christiano... Man, this could have had a very bad end... _________________ Pohjanmaan kautta! |
